Minesweeper looks like a game of nerve, but it's really a logic puzzle. Almost every move you make can be deduced — the numbers on the board tell you exactly where the mines are if you read them carefully. The goal, in one sentence
Reveal every safe square without detonating a mine. Each number you uncover tells you how many mines touch that square across its eight surrounding neighbours (including diagonals). You don't have to flag anything to win — flagging is just a bookkeeping tool to mark squares you've proven are mines — but used well it makes the harder deductions far easier to see.
Two things CardHearth does differently

- The first click is always safe. Mines are placed after your opening click, and the board is arranged so neither the square you clicked nor any of its neighbours holds a mine. So your first click never loses — and it cascades open a chunk of empty board, handing you numbers to start reasoning from. Click in the open, near the middle, to crack the board open fast.
- You can undo a misclick. A fatal click no longer ends the game forever on CardHearth — you can undo it and continue. That lets you back out of a careless slip or test a line and take it back. The aim is still to win by logic, but you're never one stray click from starting over.
Reading the numbers: the core deductions
1. The basic count rule
Every number is a tiny equation: it equals the number of mines among its unknown neighbours. Two situations let you act immediately:
- Satisfied number → the rest are safe. If a number already touches as many flagged mines as its value (a "2" with two flags beside it), every other covered neighbour is guaranteed safe. Open them all.
- Forced number → the rest are mines. If a number's count of remaining unknown neighbours exactly equals its remaining value (a "3" with exactly three covered squares left), then all of those squares are mines. Flag them.
Most of any board is solved by applying just these two rules over and over, square by square.
2. Subtraction and overlap logic
When the basic rule stalls, look at two adjacent numbers that share squares. Suppose a "1" and a "2" sit side by side and share two covered cells, but the "2" also touches one extra covered cell the "1" doesn't. The "1" says exactly one mine sits in the shared pair. Subtract that from the "2": of its remaining mines, after accounting for the shared one, that extra cell must be a mine. This "subtraction" trick — taking what one number proves and feeding it into its neighbour — unlocks positions the count rule alone can't.
3. The 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 patterns
Some shapes recur so often they're worth memorising. Along an edge or wall, a row reading 1-2-1 against a line of covered squares forces the mines to sit under the two outer 1s, with the middle square (under the 2) safe. The longer 1-2-2-1 pattern forces mines under the two middle squares, leaving the outer two safe. Spotting these on sight saves you re-deriving the same subtraction every time — they're the most common "free" moves on a frontier.
4. Chording for speed
Once a number has all its mines correctly flagged, you can chord it: open all its remaining neighbours in a single action instead of clicking each one. This is purely a speed tool, but on a board where you've flagged carefully it clears huge regions instantly. The catch: chord only on numbers whose flags you've truly proven — a wrong flag turns a chord into a detonation.
Working the board: a game plan
Open it up first. Click in the open to trigger a cascade and expose a big field of numbers — the more numbers you have, the more you can deduce. Then work the frontier: the border where revealed numbers meet covered squares is where every deduction lives. Walk along it applying the count rule, then the subtraction rule, then pattern-matching, and you'll peel the board open in waves.
When you're genuinely forced to guess, do it intelligently. Estimate the mine probability for each candidate square and pick the lowest. Squares on edges and especially in corners touch fewer neighbours, so they're often safer bets, and a good guess is one that opens new information rather than a dead cell in a corner you'll never read again. Late in the game, count: compare the mine counter against the number of covered squares remaining — if eight covered squares hold two mines, every individual square is only 25% likely to be a mine, and sometimes the global count proves a square safe outright.
Common mistakes that lose games
- Flagging by guess instead of deduction. A flag you placed on a hunch poisons every number around it and leads to bad chords. Only flag what you've proven.
- Ignoring the mine counter late-game. The global mine count is a free clue — players who never glance at it miss forced moves that the local numbers alone can't show.
- Guessing when a logical safe move exists. The most common loss isn't bad luck; it's clicking a "coin-flip" square while an undisturbed corner of the frontier still held a provable safe square. Exhaust the logic first.
