How to play Minesweeper
Every number tells you how many mines touch that square. Open squares you can prove are safe, flag the ones you can prove are mines, and clear the whole board without detonating anything. Your first click is always safe and opens a starting area. Right-click (or long-press, or Flag mode ⚑) to plant flags; tap a satisfied number tochord — open all its remaining neighbors at once.
Strategy tips
Start from the borders of the opened area: a 1 touching exactly one hidden square is a certain mine, and a number already touching its full count of flags makes every other neighbor safe. Learn the classic patterns — 1-2-1 means the mines sit under the 1s; 1-2-2-1 puts them under the 2s. When logic truly runs out, prefer guesses that touch the most numbers, and remember undo is unlimited here — purists can ignore it, learners can lean on it.
Frequently asked questions
Can my first click hit a mine?
No. Mines are placed after your first reveal, excluding that square and everything around it — so the first click always opens a safe area to start reading from.
How do I place flags?
Right-click a square on desktop, long-press on touch screens, or toggle Flag mode (the ⚑ button or F key) to make every tap place a flag. The counter in the HUD shows mines minus flags.
What is chording?
Tap an already-revealed number that has exactly that many flags around it, and all its remaining neighbors open at once. It is the fastest way to clear a board — and the fastest way to lose one if a flag is wrong.
What do the difficulties change?
Board size and mine density: Easy is 9×9 with 10 mines, Medium 16×16 with 40, and Expert the classic 30×16 with 99 mines. Each difficulty keeps its own statistics and best times.
